The first ten minutes

Stop the water. Close the valve at the fixture (under the sink or behind the toilet). If the leak isn't at one fixture, close the main shutoff, usually where the water line enters the house or at the meter box.
Stay clear of electricity. Keep out of standing water near outlets and appliances.
Smell gas? Leave the house first, then call your gas utility from outside.
Relieve and record. Open a low faucet to drain the lines, and take photos and video for insurance.
Sewer backup? Stop flushing and running water until a licensed plumber checks the line.
